BOVINE EMBRYO TRANSFER
SEK’s expansion in 2005 allowed us to add an embryo transfer facility large enough to house donor cows, calves and recipients grazing out in shaded 5 to 25 acre grass traps with automatic water systems, plenty of bunk space, and a low stress environment while providing excellent care to donors, recipients, and embryo calves.
WHY USE ET? Embryo transfer allows clients to multiply the impact of the elite females in the herd. Producers can market these genetics through embryo sales, and also sell flush rights on outstanding donor females. Many producers also enjoy incorporating outside genetics from other herds by purchasing embryos from other producers.
Fact Clients Should Know About Embryo Transfer
-16-25% of all cows flushed will NOT produce a useful embryo.
-30% of donor cows produce 70% of the embryos collected.
-Approximately 7-13% of the pregnancies diagnosed at 30 days will be lost before calving. (this usually takes place in the 1st 80 days).
-The industry wide average for useful embryos per flush is 5 1/4 embryos.
-Embryos placed average 55-60% pregnancy rate industry wide.
-The most important factor for pregnancy establishment is the quality of the frozen or fresh embryo and recipient quality provided for embryo transfer.
SETTING UP YOUR DONOR AND RECIPIENTS: It is possible that customers can set up their own donors for flushing. In this case, the customer would call and arrange a date for flushing their cow and we will give them a schedule and protocol for beginning shots. The customer then would have to make arrangements to have the donor here on flush
day, along with any recipients.
